Mission Statement
Adult Literacy Program
City College of New York
The mission of the Adult Literacy Program at the City College of New York is to provide our students with a stimulating and rewarding English language learning environment which respects them as individuals, supports them as risk-takers, empowers them to improve their lives, and encourages them to become lifelong learners.
In this learning environment, we will strive to provide professional teaching which helps students achieve language competency in all domains, build self-esteem, and facilitate change and growth. We will aim to provide instruction and guidance which enables students to make informed decisions about academic and career choices upon exiting the program. The program’s mission will be accomplished in a community of learners as we support the development of student-to-student and student-to-community relationships.
The foundation of our mission is a belief in the power of education and community to transform the lives of adult learners.
Career Kits Implementation
The NYSED/CUNY CareerKit project is a comprehensive career preparation resource for teachers and counselors in New York State. Its goal is to equip students with the skills necessary to make informed choices about their career paths. CareerKit activities are written at the HSE/Upper ESL level, with adaptations possible for Pre-HSE and intermediate ESL levels. Each of the CareerKits addresses one of ten industry sectors and integrates reading, writing, research and math skills. The sectors are:
- Healthcare
- Technology
- Community & Social Services
- Education & Childcare
- Manufacturing
- Hospitality, Recreation, & the Arts
- Food Production
- Retail
- Construction
- Transportation & Warehousing
There is also a foundational, multi-sector CareerKit, called Career Fundamentals, that introduces students to key questions related to career decision-making.
Each CareerKit activity fulfills a dual purpose – the acquisition of career information and the development of language, literacy and numeracy skills that support achievement on standardized tests.
